The Spencerville Covered Bridge, built in 1873, is located on the southeastern edge of town. The bridge over the Saint Joe River is a short distance down stream from the remains of the old dam, which is still visible when the water level is not too high. The bridge was, and still is, an important part of the community. It is a popular spot for photographs and is even used on occasion for weddings. Some years ago we had ‘Supper on the Old Covered Bridge’. It was so popular with the community and visitors from near and far that is has become an annual tradition. The bridge, which continues to be a part of the county road system, is restricted to traffic the morning of the dinner. A group of volunteers go to work getting ready. The bridge is decorated, tables and chairs are moved in and set up to be ready for the coming crowd. The food is prepared by Dutch Heritage, an outstanding local catering company. The food, which is classic Midwestern, is certainly influenced by some of the old German traditions that are part of our history. The pleasant and unique surrounding which make the event special are enhanced by a local artist, Mark Brown, who provides background music during the meal.If you have questions, email us or call Roberta at 260-750-3425.
